This visa is for international students who have completed studies in Australia within the last 6 months. The purpose of this visa is for recent graduates to gain work experience within their field, travel or even do further studies in Australia after graduation. It is divided into the Post-Study Work Stream and the Graduate Work Stream. For students who graduated from a regional University they are now eligible for an extra year on this visa.
Graduate Work Stream
This option is available to international students who completed qualifications that Australia has determined are in short supply. These qualifications are generally at Diploma level. The qualification gained must be relevant to an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List. Students must have studied for two years, 16 calendar months and completed these studies no more than 6 months prior to applying for the visa. This visa is valid for 18 months. Family can be included in this application or enter Australia as a subsequent entrant. This visa has full work rights. Applicants need to maintain health insurance.
Post-Study Work Stream
This option is available to international students who completed at least two years, 16 calendar months of study in an approved CRICOS-registered course. For students who completed a Bachelor’s degree this visa is valid for 2 years and for Masters by Research or PhD graduates it is valid for 4 years. Family can be included in this application or enter Australia as a subsequent entrant. This visa has full work rights. Applicants need to maintain health insurance.
Eligibility Criteria for 485
- Must be under 50 years old
- Provide Overseas Health Cover
- Provide Australian Federal Police Check or Receipt of the AFP day before making the application.
- All overseas qualification.
- Australian Study Requirement
To qualify for this visa, you must have completed one or more diplomas, degrees, or trade qualifications at an Australian education provider.
This provider must be registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions & Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
The course must have been conducted in English.
The length was a combined total of at least 92 weeks (two academic years). If you are unsure of the length of your course, you can find your course length on the CRICOS site.
The course was completed within a minimum of 16 calendar months.
You held a student visa at the time of study.
Some advice:
If you received, or plan to receive, credit for prior study, this may affect the 92 week requirement. Be very careful when you reduce your course time!
If you did a lot of travel offshore during your studies, you should check the 16 month requirement has not been affected.
- English Skills Requirement (Overall 6 no less than 5)
You are free from this requirement if you:
hold a valid passport from the UK, USA , Canada, New Zealand, or Ireland
AND you are a citizen of that country.
Otherwise, you must provide evidence of your skills at the time of application.
Five test results below must be a maximum of 3 years old on the day of the application, and 5 tests results are accepted.
IELTS, OET, TOEFL, PTE Academic, and CAE results are all accepted.
